Grid Patterns and 3D Printing

GRID PATTERNS AND 3D PRINTING

STYLE

GRID PATTERNS INSPIRED my final year exhibition project and I am not sure I ever shared it with you - so here it is, in the inset picture (right). I have also written about grids here, they inspired my gift wrapping this Christmas and I have also been pinning these squares obsessively. It seems I can't get away from them! It is my computer science background and time spent playing with 3D modelling software that led me to enjoying these shapes and lately, I see them everywhere. So, naturally, when I came across this collection by Israeli fashion designer Noa Raviv I had to share with you.

Noa's garments feature 3D printed elements which are warped and distorted to create beautiful patterns and texture. Tulle and organza fabrics are used in white and black with a hit of orange lines to tie the designs together. The shapes are full of volume and it almost looks as though the models are wearing drawings instead of fabrics which I find interesting.

Noa says of the collection (Dezeen, 21 August 2014):

"While working on a 3D software I was fascinated by the grid shown on the 2D screen and by the way black repetitive lines defines voluminous objects. I've translated those lines into textiles that creates this sort of optical illusion."
Noa also explains that the thin orange line represents the marker within the 3D software that is used to outline shapes and assists in spotting errors.

The results are graphic and sculptural and there is a piece or two from this collection that I would love to wear myself.

Are you obsessed with the grid too?

Shuk

Last night I was invited to the first birthday celebration for Shuk - a North Bondi cafe / bakery / deli which is inspired by the central marketplace in Israel known as The Shuk. David joined me and it was one of our first date nights back home and nice to relax outdoors with a cocktail and some nibbles in the warmth of the Sydney sun. The cafe commands a corner position with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and a lovely selection of fresh breads and bagels for sale.

There aren't many opportunities these days to wear a clutch which I picked up in Rome earlier this year. It isn't practical to use when out and about with young children and it felt different to only have to slip my mobile phone and keys into it and off we went. I kept thinking I had forgotten something but no I really didn't need to carry anything else.

Balos Bay

Time for just the two of us is a rare occasion these days and this special trip to Balos Bay was one of them. David and I didn't realise at the time what we would be in for. The trip involved a long car ride through some of the tightest heart-stopping cliff side roads and then an hour or so trek on a rocky path to reach one of the most beautiful beaches in Greece. Of course I was dressed completely wrong and my feet ached from stepping on all the little rocks - if there is ever a next time I will definitely wear more comfortable walking shoes!

The magnificent view through the hillside though speaks for itself. The sun set halfway down and we wanted to save some daylight for the trip home so although we did not make it to the beach we are so glad we took the journey to here. A memory we will never forget.

Balos Bay, you are beautiful.

Nice

March. Not sure how that happened but time has passed by far more quickly that I thought. I have been telling friends that I have been in hibernation. Taking time off to gather my thoughts before I tackle the year ahead. We are well into the year now though.
The last few months have involved travel, wedding planning and the announcement of our baby due in June. It has also been a time of personal milestones, one being that this blog is now 5 years old (can I consider my time away as 'long service leave'??) and another that I have completed my studies in interior design. The final exhibition was beautiful and I'm proud of everyone who worked so hard on the project and thank you to everyone who visited.

These photos were taken in Nice, a place I traveled to over Christmas and wish I could have stayed longer in. Still so beautiful in winter with the beach stretching for kilometres. It was also one of the best places I have found for shopping for both fashion and antiques. Do add Nice to your travel itinerary if you have the chance to.

I'm still easing myself back into this world again and will be back when I have more to share. In the meantime, I wanted to say 'hello' and not to worry. All is really good here and hope you are well too x

31 frocks in 31 days

The Frocktober challenge is complete!
Earlier this month I signed up for the challenge to wear 31 frocks in 31 days to raise awareness and much needed funds for Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF). So far we have raise $655 but you can still donate if you would like to support the cause here:

FROCKTOBER FUNDRAISING PAGE
Every 10 hours, 1 woman in Australia will die from ovarian cancer. There is no early detection test and it cannot be picked up on a pap test. The key to changing this statistic is early detection and the goal of OCRF is to raise awareness and funds for this research. OCRF receive no government funding and rely on the support of the community and business supporters to assist in driving the research forward. If you can help in any small way, that would be amazing!

THANK YOU to everyone who supported me this month. Now, let's get back to wearing pants shall we?

Hawkesbury

Road trips are our 'thing', lately. We can't keep still.

Last weekend we headed for an overnight stay in the Hawkesbury. It is still as beautiful as I remember it to be. Years ago, friends and I would hire a house boat and travel down the river, fishing, barbecuing and just having a good time. This time we spent a night in a beautiful resort and it was a relaxing way to kick off the weekend.

We needed the rest because when we arrived back on Sunday we spent hours painting and prepping Robbie's old room for a new look. It was exhausting work and I'm still a little sore from it but we have made good progress! I'll share more on that soon or you can see some of the progress made here.

In other news, I practised getting my frock on with this bright yellow dress in preparation for Frocktober which started today. I'll be wearing a dress a day throughout October to raise money for Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation. I would love your support.

A hint of Spring

"More living and less work"

True to my word we took off for a short break to the Southern Highlands. We stayed at Peppers Manor and enjoyed a drink and food by the fireplace at night and a stroll through the gardens during the day. Daffodils and pansies were blooming. Spring is such a pretty time.

I took advantage of the warmer weather by wearing a playsuit and paired it with a long sleeve top just in case the weather turned, which it did so I'm glad I covered up a little.

Winter

Blouse: A few seasons old // Skirt: Cameo // Boots: A gift // Scarf: Third Millenium

These boots were a birthday gift purchased in Los Angeles. I hadn't had the opportunity to wear them in Sydney yet but the winter weather today was the perfect setting. The reflective metal heel, gold trim and fur makes for a fun combination. I have no doubt I will get much wear out of these boots this season.

Lime

Top: I've owned for a while // Skirt: ASOS // Belt: Wheels & Dollbaby // Shoes (below): ASOS

These photos were taken last weekend on the way out to lunch. There is an industrial area a few minutes drive from where I live. Side by side concrete buildings in not very exciting colours and then BAM. Colour.

Family gatherings

Top: ASOS // Pants: Gorman // Shoes: ASOS

I took these photos before heading to work yesterday. The sun at the front of the house in the morning is blindingly bright, I could barely open my eyes.

Weekends

Dress: Cameo

My weekends are being kept relatively free of work.
In fact this week I have been cutting back on work altogether. I need to do it from time to time.

Fashion Friday: Wiggle Dress

When I bought this house at auction I hadn't viewed it in person and of course, I was worried about what I had bought! I remember visiting it for the first time and the view from the balcony blew me away. I knew we had made the right decision. I still enjoy the view. Day or evening - it is one of my favourite spots.

New furniture arrived for the balcony this week and I'll share more next week - it's beautiful! In the meantime these photos were taken tonight while we waited for a lift to arrive. That might explain why they are pixelated. I wore a new wiggle dress to my dinner date with David. I literally have to wiggle to get into it but once it was on I felt incredible.

Fashion Friday: PS. I love you

Coat: BCBG Max Azria // Skirt: Gorman // Boots: I've owned these for a few years

Palm Springs was everything I imagined it to be. The low-line architecture against the tall desert mountains. The palm trees. Postcard perfect.

I have more to share from this resort city and its architecture but it's Friday and that means I show you photos of me wearing clothes and smiling.

Okay, this won't be solely a style post as I really want to show you where these photos were taken instead...

Fashion Friday: Heading away from the summer sun

This week has been a very busy one - wrapping up a week of work, booking last minute hotels, car hires and tours for our trip. We leave soon. Away from the sun, the summer florals, the beaches and back into the winter season of the US.

I can't wait.

This trip has been a long time in the planning and although my posts will be light this month I'll be back with lots of exciting things to share, including my recap of Modernism Week. We will also be visiting the magnificent Stahl House and exploring the country, learning as much about the local design and architectural history while we are there, as well as all the usual tourist attractions!

Dinner date

The local store convenience store provided the backdrop for these images to create a mix of retro style patterns.

I have owned the dress for forever. It has traveled with me for years and I recently re-discovered it while sorting my wardrobe. Summer in Sydney calls for light and bright dresses.

Dressing out of my comfort zone

I bought this dress to wear to an upcoming event. It is a colour-themed party and I was looking for a green dress (this one is more of a green / blue in person). The dress caught my eye in the shop window with its glittering sequins. The sun loved it.

Party season

This time of year is so much fun. It's summer, it's hot and there are lots of reasons to get dressed up.

The holiday season for me means long lunches in the sun with family or celebrating on a warm night by the harbour. Last night we headed into town for my work Christmas party and we celebrated it with a glorious view of the Harbour Bridge.

I forget how beautiful Sydney can be.
