Leaving the past alone

Last night I came home to a clean house. My mum knows I have been busy lately so she ducked in to give me a hand. Thank you, mum. The garden is the toughest to look after. Lugarno is a very leafy suburb to live in and the council here loves trees. When I first moved in a neighbour filled me in about the previous owners of our house. One was a lady with a passion for plants, especially Australian natives, and was the person the council turned to for advice on which trees to best to line our street.
She has left her legacy in the garden with masses of overgrown plants and shrubs that she planted herself as well as existing trees including a gum tree and another with ivy growing on its trunk. I spent some time in the garden recently thinking of her and the mark we leave on our homes or leave behind for the next owners.
Maybe we sometimes make too many changes to our homes, don't you think? It is nice to leave a bit of the past alone.

  2. Yes I know exactly what you mean, Im renovating my 1960s home and we are even thinking about changing something as small as the light switch covers ... makes me think we have left nothing of this old house as it was other than the walls and floor. Its kind of sad but then we feel we're making it better. It definately makes you think though.

    1. Sadly it doesn't get as much use as I'd like it to because I have to clear off piles of leaves before curling up here. I'm thinking of bringing the swing indoors. Just need to find the space.

  5. Oh I wish I lived in leafy overgrown Lugarno! Unfortunately I am in Hurstville, where the trend is to rip out every living plants to make way for the latest knockdown/rebuild. We are now trying to make our mark with a native garden..... So far so good, but still a long way from blocking out the many neighbours.

    1. Belinda, it is sad when people graze the land to build. Well done on growing your own native garden!
