The weather is warming up here in Sydney and I have been spending lots of time outdoors lately, browsing nurseries for flowers to plant in the garden and lounging on the hanging chair. The backyard is a mess though and this why I don’t often write about it. Each spring I have grand plans to build an outdoor space that we can enjoy and entertain friends in but each year I never get around to it and before I can blink it is winter again and I am back indoors.

Masters have recently
launched an online website and have opened a few stores in Sydney. Have you
visited yet? They have kindly provided me with a budget of $1000 to transform
an area of my home and I chose to finally tackle the outdoors.

The project isn’t a small one. My partner and I will be building a pergola
and paved area using products from Masters. We’ll also be building a large
raised planter box to fill with plants and a purchasing a few decorative items.
Here is a rough sketch of the plans:
2. Pavers
3. Similar pergola style, painted in white
1. Hanging pots that we already own
2. Lattices,
painted white
4. Similar picket fence, although pickets will not have gaps in between
them
We purchased all of the items we needed both in store and online and
I was so pleased with the customer service. We visited the store to get some
ideas and to choose the paving.
We explained our plans for the outdoor area to a salesperson and he mocked
up a sketch for us for the pergola, calculated how many pieces of timber we
needed and helped us load the goods onto the ute we hired from Masters to take
the products back home. We happened to be there when there was a special
promotion taking place so we grabbed ourselves a few bargains.
Masters also offer a delivery service but given we were already in
store we decided to take the goods home ourselves.
If you follow me on instagram or facebook you will have already
seen a little peek into the progress of the outdoor space.
David removed
the rockery edge as it is uneven and was poorly put together. This will make
way for the new larger planter box I have planned.
My parents
popped over to give us a hand and my mum helped me with transplanting the
existing plants to another area of the garden.
The larger
plants were cleared from the area and it is now ready for the new plants. We’ve
purchased lemon trees to create an orchard behind the pergola.
The grass was
removed from the area that will be paved and reused in another part of the
garden. The toughest part of the job so far has been digging the deep holes for
the pergola posts. The soil is clay and there are large rocks buried beneath
the ground. So far we have two of the posts in place.
And there is
still so much more to do and I can’t wait to show you the finished result.

There are so many things that I need from that website! Such great things also. I would love the Akita Natural Batten Fixed Light and this vanity, Bathroom Vanity With Sink and 3 Tap Holes.
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrific giveaway! As i am yet to start a garden or lansdcaping but miss this so much, I would love to win a selection of planters and pots such as the Portico Charcoal Pot from Masters. I could create a mini garden for everyone's enjoyment and it would give me somewhere to potter! Sorry about the pun!
ReplyDeleteLoving your transformation pictures, thanks for this opportunity and the shout out about Master's as I had not heard of them prior to this! Off to have a squizz at more of their goodies! x KL
Ooh, I love what you are doing with the garden. Our house is unrenovated but in quite good nick however one thing that really drags it down are the lighting fixtures; they are just plain ugly! I would love to install new light fixtures throughout the house to lighten things up and modernise the feel of the rooms. The current lights are beyond ugly and don't match my decorating taste at all.
ReplyDeleteSome that I love are:
- Antonio Batton Light Brass finish for the entry hall
- Sheffield Brushed chrome pendant for the living room and over the dining room table
- Something quirky for the bathroom, maybe a colourful pendant light.
And if there is any money left a floor lamp for our living room too.
A new masters has recently opened near my home and ive been eyeing it off so this would be the perfect excuse to pop in and scoop up some goodies!
ReplyDeleteI have just moved into a new apartment and we have NO window coverings in the bedroom so they would certainly be number one on my list. Something like the loft roman blind would suit nicely. Throw in a 'Love' canvas print, a dante red shag rug and a couple of the angelo clear glass stacked table lamps and i'd be one very happy customer! Thanks Viv and Masters for this great opportunity x
This is perfect timing for me as I am in the middle of setting up my outdoor escape, so thank you for the opportunity to enter this giveaway!!
ReplyDeleteI can easily see the Finlay & Smith Provencal teak table (8 seater) accompanied nicely with 8 of the Finlay & Smith Riviera dining chairs with cushions. The wooden finishes will suit surrounding bushland and water views that I am lucky to have at my back doorstep. I also don’t think I could go without a daybed beside the pool so the Finlay & Smith Super Pod daybed would be fantastic.
I know that we are just coming out of winter, but for next winter, I would really like to cosy up to an outdoor fire, something like the Outdoor Steel Brazier should facilitate that greatly. Just one last thought… I don’t think I can go without the Barnyard Bull and Barnyard Pig decorative items to add some fun and colour to the yard.
We've got the basics, but we don't have many pretty bits! :)
ReplyDeleteWhat would really liven up our lounge room is a Plush or ND 3225 Indoor & Outdoor Shag Rug in red, to offset our dark brown and black shelving and lounges and to create a bit of a warmer feel. Four or five 35.5 x 45.7cm Black Frames to finally frame and display my beautiful prints from Vintage Venus, they depict Art Deco beauties and are currently hiding behind the lounge awaiting frames! As a finishing touch to our lounge room I'd add the beautiful Lousia Stacked Ball Floor Lamp. The name is sentimental to me too because it's similar to my dear grandma's name. ♥
Finally, I have a little ottoman that I love the shape of, but I'm tired of its rather drab fabric cover. I'd love the Otter Heavy Duty 3 In 1 Staple Gun so I could re-cover it in a divine new fabric in a pop of colour, like turquoise or fuchsia or dusty pink. It's got the most darling round shape and is begging for an update, but I lack the tools to do it!
Thanks for the chance to enter this competition, you know I love your blog, Viv! ♥
Great timing, Masters. I found out the horrible rusted railings on our balcony were getting replaced on the day we left for holidays so I am looking forward to going home and finally creating a nice outdoor space in time for summer. I've been doing a little research and the Futurewood decking tiles are perfect for us. I've already contacted them and they told me Masters were stockists. Once the floor is in place, I'd add two white Adirondack chairs for a comfortable reading spot to make the most of Brisbane's warm, steamy summers. I'd love a good herb garden too. I think the Dallas pots in orange, white and yellow would add some colour and create a really pretty herb garden that I'd hopefully remember to water:-). Finally, I'd get the Selleys BBQ area furniture cleaner to keep it all clean once the BBQ starts up again.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great competition! ive visited the Master's website and i was really impressed of how many things Id have to chose from. We are in the middle of updating our BBQ area so the DelTErra Amosa outdoor sofa set will be ideal for relaxing. Also the Rinnai Totum Outddor Gas heater will come handy for those cooler days and nights. OH I love the outdoor wall arts as well so many to chose from! Thank you Viv and Masters for the opportunity to enter the comp.
ReplyDeleteI love Masters - somehow the bill always seems lower than you expect (whereas at Bunnings I continually leave scratching my head as I can't believe what I've just spent!) Yay for some much needed competition! I would definitely go nuts in the garden and outdoor section - my little backyard is currently more like a jungle, and is in desparate need of a makeover! Some pavers, new plants, a compost bin and folding clothesline for a start :)
ReplyDeleteI love discovering a new website, until now I had never even heard of Masters! Having just completed our own renovation and had a baby let's just say there isn't much money left over for the finishing touches!
ReplyDeleteI would put the $500 voucher towards the Allibert California 3 seater outdoor sofa and the Weber Baby Q. Just the things we need to get us set for the summer ahead!
My garden is dull and boring,
ReplyDeleteIt’s lifeless and in great despair,
Some new accessories would liven it up,
And give it panache and flair!
With the fabulous voucher from Masters
I'd buy solar lights, candles, bug zapper,
Garden tools to keep the area maintained,
And keep the backyard looking dapper!
Oh our garden needs a complete overhaul too - I'd start with planting everything again from scratch. So we'd need some lovely plants and trees, mulch, paving...oh the list goes on! A new washing line would be handy as well. Our current one is being held up with hanging basket wires!
ReplyDeleteIn the back of my mind I always liked the idea of having a wallpaper in my bedroom. And you have some great choices on Masters!
ReplyDeleteThe two I particularly like are the Vintage Arte Wallpaper Black and Victoria 76217 Black Wallpaper.
And having the equipment to put the wallpapers up is a must. With the Shurstik Wall Coverings Paste and Harris Taskmasters Paperhanging Set.
Thanks Viv and Masters for this great comp!
I love Masters so much my husband refuses to take me there anymore as I always find something that I just HAVE to have!
ReplyDeleteI've got him fooled though now I just shop on their online shop and it's delivered straight to my door!
My list could go on and on but what I am really coveting from Masters right now is the Finlay and Smith Kopipi 4 piece lounge setting.
I have a completely empty undercover area overlooking our pool that is looking very sad indeed!
I can picture myself now stretched out relaxing reading a book with a cup of tea watching the kids swim in the pool this summer! Ah to dream.
For the reason that I live in Melbourne I LOVE the Summit Greenlife 4 Tier Greenhouse, you never know with our weather and I love the idea of growing my own veggies and with a greenhouse being able to do it all year round! Not to mention having flowers in my backyard even in our awful winters (which seem to last forever!!). Your own veggies, beautiful flowers all year round what more do you need? And what better way to refresh your home! :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to surprise my husband, he has always loved lights, he thinks the right lighting makes anything look better. So I would gomcrazy in the lighting section, he also loves Christmas, I would buy HEAPS of lights, rope lights, bud lights....... I would transform everywhere outside into a Christmas wonderland, I am usually quite reserved, so it would surprise the hell out of him. (in a good way hopefully!)
ReplyDeleteWe desperately need an outdoor setting. The one we have now if falling to bits. I would chose the panthera extension table and matching chairs. Thank you :)
ReplyDeleteI would love to put it towards a canopy to put over my sons slide and swing set that we got him for Christmas so he won't get sun burnt while playing outside
ReplyDeleteA few bags of potting mix plus some new plants and a range of new garden tools would be fabulous.
ReplyDeleteNothing like a bit of gardening to revive the soul and to remind us of the prospects of the seasonal changes!
My husbands man-cave is no more now that we are expecting bubba 2. The man cave needs to become a study/playroom, with that in mind, we have to start from scratch! I would love some Closet Maid Cube organisers along with draws for toy storage. Some Floating Wall Shelves for storage above the desk, as well as some coloured Mountable Storage Cubes which will brighten the room.
ReplyDeleteI won't enter because I'm hopeless at gardening and overwhelmed. I just wish I could see things the way you do. Our home is so bland right now cos I'm overwhelmed with where to start or how to do it. Wish I had your brain, if only for one day. xx
ReplyDeleteVery surprised with their online store and free delivery (you hearing this Bunnings?)
ReplyDeleteI have been to Masters and I would love their beautiful chandeliers.
Something like this - http://www.masters.com.au/product/900039427/abner-black-chandelier-5-lights
And an outdoor wall decoration to complete my decking. About 3 panels of this. http://www.masters.com.au/product/900026798/resource-anthurium-wall-art
sadly, my life would be complete with a brand-spanking Whirlpool Front Loading Sports Washer...... i have a little addiction to whitegoods !! love buying them, but hate that i have to use them !!
ReplyDeleteWe have had to kill all of the grass in our backyard because our ridiculously precious dog is allergic to it! So we have a big dirt patch taking up 1/3 of our backyard :(
ReplyDeleteWe would love to pave the area (it's about 5x7m) with large pavers with gaps of about 10cm between each paver to plant with miniature mondo grasses (see inspiration image here)
Our idea paver would be the Boral Abode Latte 450x450
We have seen miniature mondo grass at our local Masters.
AND, of course, we will need an outdoor setting. I've got my eye on the Finlay & Smith Provencal Teak Table paired with the Riga Outdoor Chair in White. But there is A LOT of hard work to do before we get to the fun stuff ;)
Our balcony needs a renno:
ReplyDelete* Table : Del Terra Wilson Outdoor Table 90x90cm: Not too big, fits two perfectly (and guests) Http://www.masters.com.au/product/100460872/del-terra-wilson-outdoor-table-90x90
* Bench: Nice shape and ideal size http://www.masters.com.au/product/100457868/finlay-smith-teak-garden-bench-135cm
* And gazillions of cushions! http://www.masters.com.au/product/900040233/del-terra-mary-vanlentine-green-stripped-pillow-41-x-41cm
* Del Terra Mary Vanlentine Green Stripped Pillow 41 x 41cm
we have just purchased our first home that requires renovating so for us this would mean the world....especially to our very limited budget! I would put the voucher towards some much needed new lights and fans, the current fluros and yellow fans are not really my taste ;). I would get the toot metal tube ball pendant for our hallway and the 3 blade brushed stainless steel 1200mm fans for the bedrooms. I would love to share the transformation with you too :).
ReplyDeleteI would love to put it towards some Vinyl Plank flooring! My family room has (once)cream carpet and is right next to the back door! I have 3 small kids and a sandy back yard, so it is constantly getting dirt walked all over it. I would be a much happier mummy with the carpet gone and replaced with this easy care, durable flooring!
ReplyDeleteI can/must live with our 35 year old kitchen but our bedroom really needs a makeover. I would start with painting our wall of cupboards and replacing the handles.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.masters.com.au/product/900018721/furniture-knob-20mm-x-25mm
This amazing light fitting would really make an impact!
