I have another little project I am working on. Or should I say big project? These chairs were found on eBay and they need a fair bit of work.
Yesterday my in-laws gave me a hand taking the seat covers off and sanding them. The wood is scratched up in quite a few places especially the legs. Next up we them need to repair them. A couple of screws are missing and the others could use a bit of tightening.
Then I need to decide whether to paint or stain and to recover the seats! I can imagine these looking beautiful after they are completed but I want to take care that I do a good job of them so I'm not going to rush these ones.

Oh how fun! What a great find, I can't wait to see what you do with them.
ReplyDeleteOh wow....reminds me of the ones I once had that went with my dining table years ago but had a woven cane base...I really loved them...but for some reason hubby was not a big fan at all...he found them to be quite rickety and unstable..so I ended up selling them on ebay ; ( although I have to admit..you do find yourself tightening the screws over and over as they do loosen up after constant use.
ReplyDeleteBut I still love them..and wish I never gave into selling ours...I was so sad to let them go.
They do look amazing restored to their original condition..but I can imagine these ones being painted in a greyish white tone...I suppose it will all depend on what type of fabric you end up choosing to recover them. They will look amazing when done....what a great project to embark on..hard work but I have no doubt they will come out looking a million bucks..are these for your dining room? x
Wow what a great ebay purchase - these are going to look wonderful once you work your magic on them Viv! Can't wait to see the end result x
ReplyDeleteoh, I can't wait to see the end result. I absolutely adore these chairs. How exciting!!
ReplyDeleteoh, nice! i was just looking around one or two of those the other day. i love them. looking forward to seeing the finished chairs!
ReplyDeleteAnna - I'm thinking of replacing some of the chairs around the dining table with these for a different look.
ReplyDeleteI love this style of chair. Looks like a fun project - can't wait to see the finished product!
ReplyDeletei can't wait to see the finished result!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see the end result! The possibilities of these chairs are endless!
ReplyDeleteI love these chairs - rare find to get so many the same!!! I can't wait to see what you decide to do with them
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see them painted a few different colours - maybe taken from the colours in the fabric you choose. Can't wait to see what you do with them!
ReplyDeleteHey! Same chairs! I just picked mine up in a second hand shop. Someone had already bought 6 of them so there were only two left, but they are lovely aren't they? I just had to have them. I took my time over them too, and it is worth doing them properly. I had to remove all the previous finish before restaining them, I didn't have the heart to paint them - would love to see someone else be a bit braver than me though! Here's a link:

They'll look great around the dining table, can't wait to see how they turn out, Viv :)
Wow Abby - you did such a good job! I'm going to have to send you an email to find out more about your stain and process.
ReplyDeleteI have been thinking of staining one chair first to see what it looks like before considering paint. Im not sure I have the heart to paint them either although they would look wonderful painted too.
I'm considering a french polish for them. From my reading on it the process is long.. i'll probably be coating it around a hundred times but I want to achieve a really great finish on them like you did.
French polish - I am impressed! I must confess I'm a bit too impatient and went down the stain and varnish route. I gave both of mine a test coat first, but one was too cedar and red (almost orange - it was terrible) and the other was too dark. Third time lucky!
ReplyDeleteSend me an email if you have questions :)
I'm probably being far too ambitious though Abby. We'll see how they end up ;)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you do with them. I too got 6 bentwood chairs of ebay a few weeks ago but in a slightly different style to yours.
ReplyDeleteI'm in two minds as to whether I paint or french polish.
Very keen to see what you come up with as you are far more crafty than I.
Nice buy! They are already gorgeous, but still with so much potential... Have fun choosing your fabrics!
ReplyDelete:)
Can't wait to see the finished projects! I rescued one of those chairs from a dumpster a few years back. The previous owner had painted it turquoise (!) Hope I have photos of it somewhere.
ReplyDeleteUgggggh, we had these at home growing up and my mom gave them to me when I left for college. After spending some time living in my apartment where they were undoubtedly used and abused, I think someone ultimately left them by the dumpster. Makes me sick!! I plan on reliving their loveliness through you. Ha. Can't wait to see them beautifully restored.
ReplyDeleteheaven! i bet they're going to be awesome no matter what! xxx
ReplyDeleteOooh I love the structure of those chairs! Can't wait to see them after you're done with them :)
ReplyDeleteI have the same chairs and painted them bright glossy green and they look fab. can't wait to see what you do.
ReplyDeleteGood potential in these. I glossy black or white paint would really work well. I was just looking at the most gorgeous white lacquered chairs and can't get them off my mind. I look forward to the end result.
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to seeing what you are planning with these as I have a few of my own. One is dipped black the others are natural.
ReplyDeletethese look like Tonet, nice find :)
