Kitchen Makeover: Part 2

Yesterday I posted Part 1 of my kitchen renovation. Today I'll show you the end product.

When we bought the house, the kitchen was accessible via a small sliding door adjoining the living room. To make the living and kitchen area appear larger and flow better, we opened up the wall adjoining the two rooms.

Down lights were installed and the cabinets went in. The kitchen is 'L' shaped and quite narrow. We had tall cabinets installed on the left wall and no floating cabinets on the other walls to help open up the area.

I've always loved the look of white kitchens with white bench tops. I choose antique white polyurethane cabinets and matching Caesarstone bench top.

A french style door was fitted which leads out into the garden.

After

Here is the final product!

We decided against a glass splashback and instead opted for these dusty pink brick tiles which have a slight metallic sheen to them. The house is a cottage home and I felt a glass splashback would look too contemporary. Finances played a factor too.

To decorate, two Tord Boontje 'puddles' appliques were hung on either side of the rangehood.

We also had a breakfast bench installed where the wall used to be. Best decision ever made since we use it a lot to eat casual meals or prepare food.

The cabinets were chosen in a dark brown colour for contrast and to provide some continuity with the dark furniture in the living area.

I was thinking of installing floating shelves above the breakfast bench but I could never keep the shelves tidy so I chose to hang a painting there instead.

This is the view towards the garden. The artwork on the wall is by etsy seller jellybeans.

So that's my little kitchen. I hope you like it.

UPDATE! (11.02.09)

I've since wallpapered the kitchen display cabinet. Check out more photos here.

I have no idea how it'll turn out but considering my current one is falling apart (literally, one cupboard door is sitting on the floor!) it could look ridiculous and still look better! hope little robbie is growing well! x

  9. Smart choices all around.
    Love the almost-all-white kitchen.
The pale dusty pink back splash, keeps it from looking unnecessarily sterile, and the butterfly blue paper pasted to the back of the glass cabinets is the best old trick in the book. Some brilliant moves on you part. Very well done!

  11. Just read all three posts (kitchen make-over 1 & 2 and cupboard update), and want to say what a fab job you did! Not keeping the upper cabinets above the stove etc was a great move, as was converting the dividing wall to an extra bench/eating area. From the photos I think you have achieved better continuity from your living area into the kitchen (love the peep out the kitchen window from the living room), while still being able to hide your dishes area (always tricky with more open plan spaces). Great job!

  21. Anon, I'm terribly sorry but I can't remember the style/brand of tile I used. It was from Tilecraft and it is a pink tile with a metallic sheen. They may still have something similar.
